17th Annual Charity Golf Outing

Wednesday, May 22nd, 2013

Play golf.  Help a child. Fellowship. Give a senior a gift of health.  Enjoy the outdoors. Strengthen a family.  Get closest to the hole.  Send a child to afterschool or day camp.  Get a hole in one.  Give someone a place to belong.  Hit the longest drive. Teach a kid good sportsmanship.  These are just a few of the things that can happen when you join the Y for a game of golf.

Join us for our 17th annual charity Golf Outing on Wednesday July 10 2013 at Venago Valley Golf Course.

All proceeds will be combined with others to:

  • increase scholarship funds available for working families to afford quality early care, preschool and after school programs for kids.
  • enhance family educational programs around nutrition, physical activity and healthy habits
  • increase scholarship funds available for membership and community outreach programs.

Sponsorships are still available and volunteers are needed.

Love a Yard Sale? Come to Ours!

Wednesday, May 15th, 2013

Who doesn’t love a GIANT Yard Sale?  If you have items to sell, you can bring them and sell them yourself for $10 (table provided by Camp Sherwin), or you can drop and donate clean and sorted items at the Downtown Y, 31 West 10th Street, attn: Tammy Crawford.

Don’t have any thing to sell?  We can’t believe there’s not something you must need – that you can only find at a Giant Yard Sale!  Load up the minivan and join us – concessions available!

We sure could use the help too . . . labeling, selling, cashing people out etc.  Great opportunity for youth and family volunteerism!

To volunteer, reserve a table or with any questions, contact Tammy Crawford at (814) 882-5033.

The Peak Earth Road Bike Tour will take you into the Real Country of Great Bicycling.  Super hardy souls can take on the morning challenge of the switchback climb of our 1.25 mile Up Hill Mountain TT to earn the title of King/Queen of the Mountain.

At 1 p.m., Earth Road Tours begin.  Remember, these are TOURS, not races (although, the first man and first woman to finish the 40-miler will receive special recognition.)

The Peek ‘n Peak Earth Road Tour will take you into the heart of real adventurous cycling territory.  Riders will experience seldom ridden back roads of varying surfaces.  The primary road surface will be dirt, with a challenging selection of valleys, vistas and pine tree canopies.

Your $25 registration ($35 day of race) includes your custom “Earth Road Tour” t-shirt and a seriously cool, post-Tour, boogie down featuring totally swaaaging bands.  The Sugar Shack Pub and Eatery will be open and serving food and sundry beverages.  And, you’ll be helping families and kids afford a Y experience as all proceeds benefit our annual scholarship fund We Build People. Get a Jump on Summer

Tuesday, April 16th, 2013

Boy JumpingBusy schedules and life’s daily demands can make it difficult for parents to ensure that their children are practicing healthy habits on a regular basis. According to the YMCA’s Family Health Snapshot – a survey of parents that gauges their children’s activity levels during the school year – less than 20 percent of the nation’s children get 60 minutes of physical activity, read books for fun, and eat at least eight fruits and vegetables every day. According to Erie Vital Signs, 33% of kids are overweight or obese and 26 % are below proficient reading level in the 3rd grade here in ErieCounty.

On Saturday, April 27, from 1-4 p.m. (10-2 p.m. at the Downtown Y) the YMCA of Greater Erie is celebrating YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day® with a free community event to get more families moving, learning and living healthier. Events are scheduled at the County Y, Downtown, Eastside Family and Glenwood Park Ys. Healthy Kids Day, a national initiative of the Y, takes place at 1,900 Ys and features fun, educational activities such as family fitness, outdoor recreation tips and ideas, hands-on cooking/snack demonstrations and excerpts from the Y’s Food & Fun Curriculum.

Wear comfortable clothes and if visiting the Downtown, Eastside Family and Glenwood Park Ys, bring a bathing suit!

Healthy Kids Day is generously supported nationally by Dodge. Thanks to in-kind sponsorships from Best Buy, Wegmans, & Connoisseur Media
