YMCA of Greater Erie

Help us strengthen our community

DowntownY_sm[1]Everyone knows us as four letters: Y-M-C-A.  But from A to Z, the Y brings our community so much more.  From volleyball to volunteerism, fitness to friendship and swim lessons to scholarships, the Y doesn’t just strengthen individuals, but we strengthen community.

Erie faces challenges that create greater need than ever before for the work the Y does.  Fortunately, where some see obstacles, we see opportunities for our members, volunteers, staff and generous donors like you to make a difference.

We’re working alongside the United Way of Erie County to offer services and programs that work to reduce the number of families struggling to meet their basic needs by one-third by 2025 through better access to education, income and  health.

We Build People – Annual Scholarship Campaign

Our annual scholarship campaign raises contributions to ensure that the Y has the necessary resources to subsidize membership and program fees for those that otherwise could not afford participation.  100% of gifts given are is used to grow programs and to keep membership affordable and open to all.  We also direct funding to develop community outreach efforts that address community needs around youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.  On average, the Y annually awards over $850,000 in financial assistance.

With your gift to our annual support campaign, We Build People, the Y will:

  • Increase scholarship funds available for working families to afford quality early care, preschool and after school programs for kids.  Currently, 1 in 3 families receives financial assistance for these important programs.
  • Increase scholarship funds available to create access for Y membership and programs around nutrition, physical activity and healthy habits.  Currently, 1 in 5 families receives financial assistance for Y membership.
  • Collaborate with nonprofits to support community outreach.  The Y donated 15,000 volunteer hours in the community and collected more than $15,000 in goods supporting basic needs.

Special Events & Projects

Throughout the year, the Y hosts many events including a charity golf outing, charity fitness and recreation events and more to benefit the Y’s community outreach programs such as free meals for kids, learn to swim, shower pass and healthy family home.  Sometimes, the Y is also the beneficiary of the generosity of others hosting events or fundraising on our behalf.
