Adult Pickleball Courts

Pickleball is a racket sport which combines elements of badmitton, tennis, and table tennis. Fun for all ages.

Glenwood open Pickleball courts 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Tuesdays & Thursdays and Sundays from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Don’t worry about a partner. We partner as we play. We have paddles or you can bring your own.

Eastside open Pickleball courts 11a.m.-1p.m Monday & Wednesday starting January 12th, 2015.  One court is designated for beginner/intermediate players and another for advanced players.  Pickleball is pick-up, so any can show up and get playing time.

Birthday Parties

What better place to have a birthday party for kids than the YMCA? We’ve got birthday party fun down to an art and our facility is a giant playground for kids eager to run, climb and play (and eat cake, of course!)

Party times are up to 2.5 hours and can include a variety of combinations from reserved swimming and gym time to planned youth activities/games and, if at our Camp – 70 acres of outdoor recreation including hiking, fishing and canoeing. A party room for cake and gifts is also available. Costs begin at $90 for Y members and community member rates are available. A $25 non-refundable deposit is required. Blood Drives

Giving blood is beneficial for those who give and those who receive.  The person receiving the blood gets a new chance at life or maybe a booster toward better living.  Those who give can feel the power of helping those who need.  Other benefits for the donor include self-awareness of pulse, blood pressure, cholesterol, and hemoglobin level as well as bringing own high levels of iron.  When a person donates blood they are helping the research toward healthy living and a healthy community. Blood Drives are held in partnership with the Community Blood Bank.

Boot Camp

An intense military style workout. 60 minutes of grueling instruction on abdominal and calisthenics work. Plus stair runs, “dock” runs, track running with sprints and intervals of pull ups and dips. Some classes include suspension training. Class ends with strength training focused on the upper body.   Instructor led class with exercise variations for all fitness levels.

About Instructor Alexa Phelps

Alexa PhelpsMiss Alexa has been dancing from the age of three and never plans to stop! She has studied at various dance studios in the Erie area encompassing multiple styles of dance, including ballet, pointe, jazz, hip hop, tap, contemporary, modern jazz, Irish hard and soft shoe, and Latin Jazz. She has been teaching dance for 12 years, starting at the age of 11. She has performed in numerous local showcases, including spring and summer performances, The Nutcracker, and Celebrate and We Love Erie Day shows. She has danced in New York City in Times Square and on Broadway and Off-Broadway stages for five years in a row. She participated in Project Dance NYC in Times Square five Aprils in a row during her middle and high school years of school. While in NYC, she studied dance with Francis Roach and Luigi Faccuito, himself, at Luigi’s Jazz Centre, and the Broadway Dance Center. She has also taken workshops from Broadway star Nick Adams and Off-Broadway star Don Kirsch. She also followed her studies to different areas of Ohio, as she had a dance and cheerleading scholarship her first year of college. She was a sport and competition cheerleader for five years, going to multiple competitions and workshops through CCC and NCA, and was a college cheerleader for one year. Miss Alexa has been coaching cheerleading for six years. Miss Alexa is currently a 6th and 7th grade English teacher, a Graduate Student at Edinboro University, and, of course, a very passionate dance and cheerleading teacher here, at the Glenwood YMCA. Throughout her experiences with dance, Miss Alexa has never lost the passion for the art and hopes to pass on the same love and passion to her students.

Deep Water Competency Test

Drowning is the second-leading cause of injury-related death for children ages 1-14 years old. In addition to drownings, five times as many children are victims of near-drowning incidents.

The YMCA of Greater Erie is committed to aquatic safety! All youth ages 17 and under will require a deep water competency test and an identification wristband before entering the deep end of the small pool or large pool. The test will only need to be completed once as a record will be kept on file but a wristband will need to be obtained from the membership or service desk and worn every time you visit.

Please be sure to stop by the membership desk prior to entering the pool area to get your wrist band.

John Gilmore Scholarship Fund for Diabetes Camp

John Gilmore was the Youth Sports Program Director for the Glenwood YMCA in Erie, PA.  John was an avid cyclist and weight lifter despite living with type 1 diabetes.  He loved children and felt passionate about healthful living.  John touched the lives of thousands of people through his kindness and generosity.  John died unexpectedly in his sleep on March 27, 2009 at the young age of 51.  After John’s passing a memorial fund was established in his name.

The cost for one child to attend YMCA Camp Fitch’s Dr. Barclays Camp for Diabetes  is $555.00. The Glenwood Park Y provides scholarships for Glenwood Y youth members. These scholarships are being awarded through the John Gilmore Memorial Fund and will be awarded based on financial need and/or merit.  To learn more about this fund, contact Branch Executive Director Jim McEldowney.

Shallow Water Fitness

The water fitness/aerobics program was developed for the YMCA by Mary E. Sanders, PhD. The exercises are performed primarily in a vertical position in shallow water.  Water resistance creates an environment that improves cardiovascular conditioning; strength and endurance; and flexibility and balance.  Classes will be in one of three formats: Regular Aerobics will work through all of the shallow water moves; Dance & Fun will incorporate elements of different dance forms and games designed to challenge dynamic balance; Cardio Intervals will challenge members’ strength and endurance.  Work at your own pace; instructor-led modifications.

Variety Night – Teen Sports Program

Teens beat the Friday night boredom because the Y has the answer to “there’s nothing to do”. In a fun and supervised teen environment, teens join up in games of volleyball, soccer, basketball, kickball, dodgeball, lacrosse and possibly more. The focus is on recreation rather than competition. Not to mention, they’ve put the cell phone down and made some new friends – who they might text later! This program is ongoing; there’s no registration deadline. Cost is free for Y members/non-members $58.

Vinyasa

Vinyasa is a moving yoga practice which links one asana or pose to the next, through the breath.  Vinyasa helps to orchestrate a balance of strength and flexibility within the body, merging movement and stillness. This class is stimulating and heat-building.  Previous yoga practice recommended.

Water Boot Camp

This class meets in the shallow end of the large pool navel to nipple depth. This is the ultimate workout for total body fitness. A  combination of cardio and muscle strength and endurance exercises are used. Work at your own pace; instructor-led modifications. Held at Glenwood.

At the Eastside Y suit up for our Water Boot Camp class. This 60-minute class is everything BUT your grandma’s water fitness class.

We combine a sequence of movements designed to get your heart pumping, build strength and endurance and improve your body compostion from head to toe.  This class is coreographed to today’s popular music.

Connect with a great support network by participating in Weight Watchers® at the Y! Our Weight Watchers® group is an opportunity to “buddy-up” with others, gather resources about nutrition and living a healthy lifestyle. You can lean on your trained Meeting leader, who has been in your shoes.

Members who attend a minimum of 11 meetings earns a free month of YMCA membership (one awarded annually per household).

Cost is $156 for 12 weeks.  Pre-payment is required at time of registration and can be made in full or in three equal installments.  Program includes group meeting and 14 weeks of free Essential etools and 24/7 chat.  Program fees are established by Weight Watchers®.

Join at any time.  A minimum of 15 participants are required by Weight Watchers®.

Although cultivating healthy habits is a good idea for anyone, it is survivors are often at higher risk for developing other health problems as a result of their cancer treatment.  Healthy behaviors can help survivors regain or build strength, reduce the severity of side effects, reduce the risk of developing secondary cancers or other health issues, and enjoy life more.

The journey at the Regional Cancer Center incorporates a focus on mind-body-spirit well-being from the day  you walk through the doors.  They are committed to integrating wellness components into your care and treatment.  They want you to feel empowered and to regain a sense of control over your cancer.

Research shows that by integrating physical activity, proper nutrition and mind-body-spirit awareness, you can feel better and reduce the side effects of cancer treatment such as nausea, depression, anxiety, fatigue and weight gain.

In keeping with RCC’s mission of providing comprehensive care with a commitment to optimal quality of life for patients and families, RCC has partnered with the Glenwood Park Y to offer supportive, holistic classes in a nurturing and spacious environment.

The classes will be taught by expert fitness professionals and will be offered to cancer survivors and caregivers only, completely free of charge.

YMCA Aquatic Safety Assistance (YASA)

This certification course is designed to prepare participants with the skills and knowledge needed to recognize aquatic risks and assist a lifeguard in the emergency response of an accident or injury. Minimum age: 14 years and must be able to swim 100 yards and tread water 2 minutes, legs only.

YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor Course

This is the introductory course given to YMCA instructors teaching Parent/Child, Preschool, and Youth and Adult classes.  This certification course gives new instructors the basics for teaching swim lessons that are student centered, value oriented, safe and effective. Participants must be 16 years old at the time of registration.  100% attendance is required on all dates.  Cost: Free to YMCA employees, $75/Y members, $150/Non-Member.  Prerequisites: Current certifications in CPR Pro, First Aid and Oxygen Administration, ability to demonstrate proficiency in Minnow level swimming skills.

Youth Co-Ed Indoor Soccer

This program is offered twice a year (Mar-May & Oct-Dec) for ages 4-13.  The goal of the program is for players to learn the basic skills and strategies of soccer; such as:  dribbling, passing, shooting, formations, offense/defense, etc.  Games (6) are held on Saturdays and 30-minute practices are held once a week, Tuesday through Friday.

Youth Dance

Our Ys offer Irish Step, ballet, jazz, hip-hop and modern depending upon location and student’s ability. Teaches creative movement through dance techniques. Ages vary by location.  Program held throughout the year at the County, Eastside Family and Glenwood Park Ys.  Program offered during the summer at YMCA Camp Sherwin.

About Alexa Phelps, Glenwood Y Instructor

Alexa PhelpsMiss Alexa has been dancing from the age of three and never plans to stop! She has studied at various dance studios in the Erie area encompassing multiple styles of dance, including ballet, pointe, jazz, hip hop, tap, contemporary, modern jazz, Irish hard and soft shoe, and Latin Jazz. She has been teaching dance for 12 years, starting at the age of 11. She has performed in numerous local showcases, including spring and summer performances, The Nutcracker, and Celebrate and We Love Erie Day shows. She has danced in New York City in Times Square and on Broadway and Off-Broadway stages for five years in a row. She participated in Project Dance NYC in Times Square five Aprils in a row during her middle and high school years of school. While in NYC, she studied dance with Francis Roach and Luigi Faccuito, himself, at Luigi’s Jazz Centre, and the Broadway Dance Center. She has also taken workshops from Broadway star Nick Adams and Off-Broadway star Don Kirsch. She also followed her studies to different areas of Ohio, as she had a dance and cheerleading scholarship her first year of college. She was a sport and competition cheerleader for five years, going to multiple competitions and workshops through CCC and NCA, and was a college cheerleader for one year. Miss Alexa has been coaching cheerleading for six years. Miss Alexa is currently a 6th and 7th grade English teacher, a Graduate Student at Edinboro University, and, of course, a very passionate dance and cheerleading teacher here, at the Glenwood YMCA. Throughout her experiences with dance, Miss Alexa has never lost the passion for the art and hopes to pass on the same love and passion to her students.

Youth Fitness/Cardio Course

Designed for ages 11-14 years. Under the supervision of trained instructors, the course concentrates on flexibility, cardiovascular and strength. Proper form, full range of motion and appropriate resistance and repetitions are emphasized. Get a healthy, early start to fitness and reinforce a lifetime pattern to exercise. At the Eastside Y the Youth Cardio Course is designed for ages 11-14years.  This is a members only class. This is an age appropriate training on cardio equipment . Everybody and every body! Each Zumba® class is designed to bring people together to sweat it on. We take the “work” out of workout, by mixing low-intensity and high-intensity moves for an interval-style, calorie-burning dance fitness party.
