Good things happen when families unplug and play together. So, grab your kiddos and join us at YMCA Camp Sherwin’s Annual Fishing Derby on Saturday, July 25.
As parents, you know better than most that kids benefit from contact with nature and exploration. There’s a growing body of research pointing to the fact that time spent in contact with nature is good for everyone, but that it is particularly important to the healthy development of children. Not only are they naturally more active, but they develop a greater sense of independence, spark imaginations and develop social skills. Children who spend time in nature are also more likely to develop a lifelong connection to and concern for the environment.
And, it’s good for adults too! Recent studies point to the mental and physical benefits of being active outdoors and having regular contact with nature.
So, circle your calendar now for our annual fishing derby. Kids ages 3-15 cast their lines beginning at 10 a.m. in Shaper Pond and we fish until noon. Kids bring their own poles and we supply the bait (although some families bring their own too.) Following the derby, we gather for derby prizes and lunch (kids eat free). And, if you’re not too tired, you are welcome to stay and use the outdoor pool and new Spray & Play Park.
The event is free and open to the public. Call 774-9416 for more information.
