With keeping the New Year’s Resolution, Aerial Yoga was top of the list to try. Who doesn’t want to swing from silks and hang upside down?! Since trying Aerial yoga with Erin at Pranayoga, 1001 West 6th Street, we’ve been back several times and now take the class monthly. We started out by getting used to the silks and learning how to trust ourselves. Aerial yoga incorporated traditional yoga moves in new and exciting ways. We were able to do a pigeon pose with our feet off the ground, for example. We also were able to stretch and move in ways not possible without the silks supporting our weight. And, of course, we did get to hang upside down a lot!!
Erica: I grew up doing gymnastics, so Aerial Yoga sounded right up my alley. It met all of my expectations. Erin was fantastic and very knowledgeable. She may say I made her a little nervous because sometimes waiting for directions is not something I’m very good at! After the first class, I went home and researched how to get the Silks, so that I could do it at home. I may have been a little overzealous thinking I was ready to teach myself at home after one class, but my enthusiasm was quite high.
Walking in is an experience since Pranayoga is attached to Virgil’s Pizza. I almost didn’t make it to the class because the smell of freshly made pizza is very enticing. Once entering the yoga studio, the pizza and hunger pangs immediately disappeared. The studio is warm and inviting; not at all intimidating and Erin was there to greet us making me feel right at home. By the end of class, I was relaxed, stretched, and ready to curl up and go to bed…exactly the feeling I want after a yoga class!
Michelle: Let’s just say yoga is out of my comfort zone in general. I’m not very flexible, I can’t quiet my mind and forget about meditation. Despite all of that I was really excited to try aerial yoga. Right from the beginning Erin made me feel comfortable. She gave us time to get familiar with the silks and the way they will hold our weight so that by the time we were ready to do inversions (hanging upside down) I was ready for her to bring it on. That very first night I was able to do things I never would have been able to do in traditional yoga do to my lack of flexibility. I was able to stretch, do inversions and push myself past limits that being on the ground imposes on me. Even the relaxation at the end made me feel good about the work I had just done in class. Let’s just say I felt like I was ready to audition for Cirque De Soleil by the time I left. Needless to say we’ve been going back once a month adding to what we learned each time. This past month we even were able to do shoulder stands which made me feel really strong and accomplished. If you want to try something new and not at all like anything you’ve done before schedule a session with Erin. You will leave feeling confident, strong and relaxed. Definitely my favorite thing we have done so far.
Stay tuned for next month… grab your heels girls, we’re going to a pole dancing fitness class!!!!!
