My weight loss journey initially began in 2012 when I lost close to 100 pounds. I was healthier and thinner that I had been since middle school. My weight has been a consistent issue since I was a child.
In 2014, my husband and I welcomed a baby boy into the world. One thing we didn’t anticipate was his multitude of health issues. After spending months in and out of the hospital living a sedentary life, eating unhealthy hospital food and stress eating, I gained most of my weight back.
My family took a trip to the Cleveland Zoo in July 2015. While we were there, we took a “short cut” up a sloped boardwalk. Upon reaching the top, I felt so light-headed and winded I thought I might faint. That night, while looking at pictures from the trip and thinking about my health, I decided it was time to make a change. A permanent one this time.
A few days later, I was back at the Y. I started by utilizing the traditional gym equipment including a treadmill, stationary bike, and elliptical. That fall, a made a new friend at the Y. After talking for awhile, she suggested I try some of the group exercise classes with her.
I had never participated in group classes before because I was afraid of embarrassing myself or not being able to keep up with the others. I decided to conquer my fears and give the classes a try. I’m so glad I did! The instructors (and classmates) always made me feel welcome and encouraged to do my best. I now enjoy many classes including ZUMBA, ZUMBA Step, Cardio Dance, Barre, Boot Camp Gold and Water Boot Camp. There’s more classes I want to try too!
I still use the traditional equipment as well. In fact, in January I completed my first Y try-athalon and participated in my first ZUMBAthon with plans to attend at least two more in the near future.
So far, I have lost 66 pounds with the ultimate goal of 100 pounds. I may still be a work on progress, but I’m much happier and healthier!
