YMCA of Greater Erie

Glenwood Park Y Foster Love Christmas Tree Project @ Glenwood Park Family YMCA
Nov 21 – Dec 16 all-day

“They arrived at our door with a trash bag of a few dirty belongings. Three faces (ages 5, 3, & 8 months) stared at us as we stared back at them. The case worker handed us a few clean diapers and one dirty bottle and drove away. “

Last year, over 10,000 kids were served through the foster care system in Pennsylvania alone.   Many of these kids are taken to a foster home with no belongings or a few items thrown into a trash bag.

The Foster Love Project provides bags to kids when they are placed into foster care.  A bag of their very own to help reassure them that they and their belongings are NOT disposable.

Kids in foster care face challenges that many of us cannot fathom. We want them to know they are not forgotten, but we love them and care about their future.  The Glenwood Y was asked by Project Love to be a drop off site for the Erie community.

As the tags are hung on our Christmas tree located in the Cafe Lounge, you can see the items that are needed for these kids this season.  The mission of the YMCA states that at the Y we are “for all”.  In an effort to ensure that all of our membership could participate, some tags were made to fill an entire bag for one child and others were for smaller items that together would fill a bag. Below is a list of the items that complete a bag to be sent to a child, for full image quality Click Here.

Last year, the generous Glenwood Y family filled 50 Foster Love backpacks!  Thank you for helping to give kids in foster care the love & dignity every child deserves!
