YMCA of Greater Erie

Our Impact

In 2016, the Y provided 400 monthly memberships to veterans.  82% of participating veterans report having gone from extreme daily anxiety to having moderate daily anxiety.  Vets also ranked their general level of motivation to participate in social activities on a typical day. After three months of Y membership, 74% reported an increased level of motivation to socialize.

Wellness Series for Veterans

Everyday troops are returning home from war with not just physical trauma, but mental trauma as well.  The common diagnosis amongst veterans is PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and Anxiety Disorders.  Veterans are supported with the use of prescription drugs, group therapy and counseling sessions.  Even with this support, transitioning back into everyday life and the workforce can be a huge challenge.  Suicide rates, substance abuse, domestic violence and depression continue to rise. The conventional methods of treatment for these veterans are simply not enough.

One proven method of treatment that is gaining momentum is the use of physical fitness to alleviate the side effects of PTSD.  Physical fitness certainly helps relieve some of the pain and stiffness that most veterans might have, but studies are reporting that having a regular physical fitness routine has also helped to decrease anger, night terrors, memory lapses, anxiety and depression in those veterans suffering from PTSD and Anxiety Disorders.  Having a regular physical fitness routine not only helps provide veterans with an outlet for their anxiety as they transition back into the work force, but also provides them with healthier habits.

More than 12,000 veterans in Erie County are currently treated for post-traumatic stress disorder.

The Wellness Series for Veterans program provides free wellness programs and Y memberships for veterans to help them deal with anxiety and return back to society.
