For more than 150 years, the YMCA of Greater Erie has been teaching kids and adults how to swim and building confidence in and out of the pool.
Local businessman Elliot Spaeder learned to swim at the Downtown Y and went on to become a stand-out swimmer for both Cathedral Prep and Gannon University.
His swimming skills and confidence gained at the Downtown Y inspired him to swim across Lake Erie from Long Point, Canada to North East, PA. The 24.3 mile solo swim will take place the week of July 20.
Wanting to give back to the organization that fueled Elliot’s love of swimming and has supported his training for this event, Elliot’s swim is a fundraising event benefitting the Downtown Y.
All proceeds raised will be matched by the Wm. T. Spaeder Company – .50 for every $1 donated – and the funds will be used to enhance family and teen programming at the Downtown Y.
