Community Health

The YMCA of Greater Erie has always been dedicated to its mission of helping and enriching our community and ALL those who live in it. One way we accomplish this is by providing our members opportunities to prioritize their health and wellness. Through seminars, in-house events, and even partnerships with community organizations, we want to make our community a better, happier, and healthier one.

Giving blood is a simple, safe way to make a big difference in people’s lives.

Donating blood can help:

  • People who go through disasters or emergency situations
  • People who lose blood during major surgeries
  • People who have lost blood because of a gastrointestinal bleed
  • Women who have serious complications during pregnancy or childbirth
  • People with cancer or severe anemia, sometimes caused by thalassemia or sickle cell disease

Before You Donate

If you want to donate blood, it’s important to ensure you meet the requirements and are properly prepared.

You’ll need to be:

  • At least 16 years old to donate whole blood (at least 17 to donate platelets) in most states
  • Weigh at least 110 pounds
  • In good health and feeling well

Blood Pressure Screenings

It is essential to check and monitor your blood pressure when you can. Maintaining healthy numbers helps to reduce the risk of other health issues in the future.

Tips for the most accurate blood pressure measurement

• Sit quietly for 5 minutes prior to measuring blood pressure.
• Sit correctly in a chair with your feet flat on the floor and back supported.
• Use the restroom. A full bladder can impact your blood pressure.
• Don’t smoke, exercise, or consume caffeine or alcohol for at least 30 minutes before reading.
• The arm should be bare or covered with a thin shirt and supported at heart level.

REGISTRATION NOT REQUIRED

For questions about this program, or our one-on-one Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring program, please email our Chronic Disease Prevention staff at [email protected] or call 814-899-9622.
