GIVE HOLIDAY SMILES TO A CHILD OR TEEN

Friday, November 11th, 2011

SPONSOR A GIFT OR MEMBERSHIP FOR DESERVING KIDS

Our most vital community work is evident when we look to our afterschool programs for youth and teens in public housing neighborhoods and at our Downtown Y.  Our staff is not just there to supervise, but to engage the kids in recreation, life skills, learning and making friends.  Our meal program ensures that the kids have a well-balanced, family-style dinner every night.  And, our service-learning projects teach the kids that those that receive can give back and change someone’s life.

Each holiday season, the Y hosts a Christmas party for these 200+ children in our YMCA Kids Clubs & Downtown Y Teen Center.  We recognize that the small gift they receive from the Y, might be the only gift they receive.

The kids make a wish list, and, while, the year’s popular toys and electronics are wished for, so are less obvious gifts like new sneakers, a basketball, winter coats, new books, and even memberships to the Y.

For the Holiday Party, the Y allots $10 per child in the Kids Club, and there is about 180 of them, and $25/teen in the Teen Center.  Sometimes, our donors like to individually give the gift of membership to the Kids Club & the Teen Center.  Kids in our Kids Club pay $3.60/year and teens in our Teen Center pay $5.60/week to come to the Y.

Won’t you help us provide holiday memories, fun and friendship (life-long lasting memories too) through the Y’s Kids Club and Downtown Y Teen Center?  You can give online at www.webuildpeopleerie.org.  Your support will impact someone you may never meet, but rest assured, that you made the impossible possible for that person.

Y YOUTH SPORTS

IT’S MORE THAN JUST A GAME

When kids play sports, they get more than just exercise.  Besides being physically healthier, they have a higher self esteem and a healthier body image.  The benefits of playing sports go far beyond the physical.  Kids who play perform better in school, develop better interpersonal skills, and work better in groups.

The Y’s Youth Sports program maximizes the positive effects of playing sports by emphasizing healthy competition and promoting teamwork along with individual development.  The Y focuses on the life lessons to be learned from sports and coaches strive to instill a positive self-image in each player.  Playing time is guaranteed for everyone and you get your choice of practice time.  Of course, family involvement is always welcomed and encouraged.
